Define Normal.
This was undoubtedly one of the largest projects I've taken on while in school and I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. One semester of motion graphics does not a motion graphics designer make, however it is definitely a skill I want to hone further. My final project, Define Normal. challenged me to utilize footage, illustration, typography, and animation to tell a story. It also pushed me out of my comfort zone and in front of my own camera. I couldn't, in good conscience, create something celebrating the female body only to then give in to insecurities and hide my own. Needless to say, I learned a lot but grew even more.
Here's a little more about this final project:
I wanted to create a piece that normalized the female body and encouraged women to rewrite society's pre-packaged narrative about what is acceptable, beautiful, and normal. To convey the fact that this struggle has been a multi-generational and a deeply personal fight for women, I made a point to film myself and paired that with found footage and stock imagery from previous decades.
While no one video can immediately change the lens through which we view our bodies, I hope this can be a catalyst for conversations or at least provide some entertaining information.
